    Introduction

By embarking on an innovative project of combining academic education with cultural learning experience, Malaysian universities shifted to cooperation with the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum. The project was to see students having experience to close the gap between classroom theories and practical implementations in their education process.

    Art Immersive Experiments

The third floor of the museum has a mixed manner collection of arts comprising of batiks, oil paintings, water color, and mixed media, and acrylic paintings. It was fascinating to the students to see the elaborate nature and cultural meaning of these works, making Malaysia and its artistic culture less foreign to them. This practical work enabled students to get in touch with art in a meaningful way whereby it has made them more creative and analytical.

    The Knowledge of Monetary Malaysia

The museum has three levels where exhibits about Islamic finance, numismatics, monetary history, and economics among other things are provided. Students discussed how the currency and financial system of Malaysia have evolved over a certain period of time and have learned to analyse the economic growth of the country. This experience in real practice of financial concepts supplemented their academic education and gave them the edge to practice what they learned.

    Building Stronger Connections

Besides academic enrichment, the trip contributed to the improvement of relationship between the students and lecturers. The teacher-student relations are very important to achieve academic success, and this mutual experience promoted a favorable environment of learning. The interaction of students with lecturers took place outside the classrooms, which made their interaction more valuable to them.

    Similar Initiatives Across Malaysia

    1. Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) and Bank Negara Malaysia Museum, Art & Knowledge Management Centre (MAGKMC)

In 2015, APU faculty and students made up of the school of computing partnered with MAGKMC to come up with 2 interactive digital videos, one meant to cover the children gallery, and the other about the economics gallery. Such resources will add value to visitor experience with attractive multimedia content. The form of a formal Letter of Undertaking offered the students the chance to apply the practice of exhibit design in the museums and to work along the lines of the learning themes of MAGKMC. The project integrates the applied technology design and museum education providing students real experience and familiarization with the museum work processes, a successful example of educational-industrial integration.

    2. The University Sains Malaysia (USM) and the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM)

In 2022 USM and IAMM entered into a Memorandum of Agreement to advance educational and research programmes in conservation, heritage science and museum studies. The partnership involves shared research undertakings, internships at USM conservation laboratories, and cross-disciplinary lectures in Islamic art and history as well as materials science. This inter-institutional collaboration puts the students in the cross section of arts, science and heritage so they can be directly involved in artifact analysis, preserving them, which is an excellent precedent of experiencing learning in heritage science.

    3. University of Colombo AND Borneo Cultures Museum Sarawak OR Swinburne University of technology Sarawak campus

On 6 August 2022, the students of English Enhancement Program (EEP) Swinburne watched the Borneo Cultures Museum in Kuching. It was one of the activities in a larger educational package aimed at exposing the students to experiences of indigenous cultures in Sarawak. Participants also had the chance to visit galleries with themes of harmony with nature, objects of desire among others, which represented the narrative of the various ethnic communities of Sarawak in the indigenous artifacts and narratives of the galleries. Group learning and contextual learning were facilitated by Professor Mahathir Mohammad and members of staff. Despite the absence of an official commitment, this collaboration involves local heritage museums in the curriculum as a way of enhancing connection with local culture and training on soft skills in students beyond the exam years.

    Conclusion: Education and Culture Bridge

This trip to the museum is characteristic of the university to offer holistic learning that incorporates both academic learning as well as experiences that come along with culture. Taking into consideration the opportunities to immerse students in all of the rich heritage of Malaysia, the institution can have the students ready to face a balanced future.
