    The Balloon Era

The history of parade inflatables starts with balloons. In the 19th century, balloons were a novelty item, loved by kids and adults alike. The first recorded use of parade balloons dates back to the inauguration ceremony of Abraham Lincoln in 1861. However, these were small handheld balloons, a far cry from the giant inflatables we know today.

It wasn’t until the 1920s when the first large-scale parade balloon made its appearance. Tony Sarg, a puppeteer and illustrator, was hired by Macy’s to create a spectacle for their Thanksgiving Day Parade. Sarg designed large inflatable animals which were filled with air and pulled through the streets of New York City. The giants were instantly popular and, over time, became a beloved tradition of the Macy’s parade.

    The Birth of Parade Inflatables

In 1928, Sarg introduced a significant innovation – helium-filled balloons. The use of helium made the inflatables lighter and allowed them to float above the parade, creating an incredibly impressive spectacle. The fantastic floating creations were loved by parade viewers and became a breakthrough in the history of parade inflatables.

Unfortunately, World War II led to a helium shortage, which forced Macy’s to stop using inflatable balloons for a few years. However, the parade inflatables made a triumphant return in 1945, bigger and more spectacular than before.

    From Balloons to Gigantic Floats:

The evolution of parade inflatables did not stop with helium balloons. In the 1960s, the term ‘balloon’ became too restrictive to describe the vast, complex, and creative inflatables gracing parades. Many inflatables began to incorporate various elements, transforming from simple shaped balloons into gigantic floats.

The 1960s also saw a shift in the themes of parade inflatables. Initially, inflatables were largely based on animals and generic shapes. However, throughout the 60s, recognizable cartoon characters and pop culture icons began to dominate parade inflatables. This trend continues today with beloved characters from popular shows and movies regularly making appearances as parade inflatables.

The Contemporary Era of Parade Inflatables

Today, parade inflatables have become an essential part of grand parades worldwide. Whether it’s the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in the USA, the Carnival in Brazil, or the New Year’s Parade in London, inflatable floats are everywhere, delighting spectators and making parades colorful and joyous. Spectacular technological advancements enable contemporary inflatables to be larger, more complex, and incredibly detailed.

The evolution of parade inflatables, from simple air-filled balloons to highly detailed, gigantic floats, is nothing less than fascinating. They’ve indeed come a long way from their humble beginnings to become the spectacular sights we all look forward to seeing today.
