Do you think of poker as mastering the game? Think again. There’s more to it than just knowing when to fold or raise. It’s a lifestyle.

The pros have built certain habits that help them stay on top. And I’ve learned a thing or two by watching them over the years. Today, I’ll give you the scoop — keep reading!

Up Your Play in These 8 Steps

    1. Stick to a Routine That Works for You

Successful players love a routine. Sounds boring, but works. A lot of pros set their day up the same way, like:

    • Waking up.
    • Hitting the gym.
    • Eating right.
    • Studying a bit.
    • Playing.

Routines help focus. That is, your body and mind know what to expect. Thus, you don’t waste time thinking about the little stuff. You stay locked in on what matters.

Plus, you can gamble at your sites more safely. Imagine entering your favorite site like Fair Go Casino Australia: the thrill, the urge, the excitement. You can be dragged away easily. Discipline and a settled routine best help to avoid the urge.

Don’t make your routine too complicated. Find a flow that works for you and follow it.

    2. Stay Fit, Play Better

Fitness is key. Long games can mess with your focus if you’re not in shape.

Look at someone like Daniel Negreanu. He’s always working out. It’s no coincidence he’s stayed competitive for so long.

I’m no gym rat at all. But when I started exercising regularly, things got better. Simple stuff like a 30-minute walk or some light weights made a big difference.

    3. Eat to Think — Not Just Survive

Let’s talk food. A lot of pros eat pretty clean. They know that junk food makes them sluggish. They’re not chewing on carrots all day. Still, they make smart choices.

I realized that what I ate was making me tired in the middle of games. I used to grab whatever was quick. But I’ve switched to meals that keep me fueled:

    • Eggs in the morning.
    • Nuts for snacks.
    • A balanced dinner with protein and veggies.

Now, I can play for longer without that 3 p.m. crash.

    4. Get Enough Sleep, No Excuses

Lack of sleep messes with your decision-making big time. You make more mistakes, and your focus is shot.

Many pros treat their sleep like it’s part of their job. Eight hours is the sweet spot. Once I started making sleep a priority, my play has been more consistent. I don’t zone out or miss key reads because I’m tired.

Struggle with sleep? Try setting a routine here too:

    • Stick to the same sleep schedule every day.
    • Stay off screens before bedtime.

Trust me, you’ll see the difference in your focus.

    5. Master Your Emotions

Ever watched someone like Phil Ivey play? Then, you’ll see what I mean here. The best players are stone-cold under pressure. They don’t tilt. They don’t get rattled. Keeping emotions in check is a part of the game. Staying calm, no matter how the cards fall.

I used to let bad beats get to me. One bad hand would throw off my entire session. I’ve since learned some basic techniques to stay calm, like:

    • Deep breathing.
    • Stepping away for a few minutes when things get heated.

Now, I try to approach each hand with the same mindset. No matter winning or losing.

    6. Never Stop Learning

I don’t care how long you’ve been playing — there’s always more to learn. If you don’t, you’re falling behind.

The top pros? They never stop studying. Here’s what they constantly do:

    • Review hands.
    • Analyze others.
    • Exploring new strategies.

Make time for learning. Even 30 minutes a day adds up.

I make it a point to watch replays of my games. It’s amazing how much you pick up when you review what you did wrong.

Want to break away from that never-ending learning? Well, then, you better switch from poker completely and try these new online slots. Among all the variety listed, here are my favorite titles I strongly recommend:

    • Burning Stars 3.
    • Cash Elevator.
    • Elemento.

    7. Be Unpredictable at the Table

Now, a trick you won’t hear much about: mix it up. The best players are unpredictable. They don’t follow a fixed strategy all the time. They’re always adjusting, always evolving. If you get too predictable, the other players will figure you out.

I like throwing in a few unexpected moves — like bluffing when I normally wouldn’t. That keeps my opponents on their toes.

You don’t need to do it all the time. But, the element of surprise can work in your favor. It makes you tougher to read.

    8. Build a Support System Outside of the Game

A lot of pros talk about a support system. The game is mentally draining. It helps to have people you can talk to or lean on. That can be family, friends, or even a coach.

For me, the best support is talking to fellow players. They know what it’s like when you’ve had a rough session. Sometimes, just venting helps you clear your head.

Don’t isolate yourself — have a network to keep you balanced.

Live Like a Pro, Play Like a Pro

Sharp players follow these lifestyle rules for a reason — they work. But, you don’t have to be a pro to apply those. Start small and integrate those into your routine one by one. Soon, you’ll notice your game move to the next level.

Steal what works for you and watch the results show up at the tables!
